Amy & Nick's Son Owen

February, 2001 (3 months)

I've been a very thoughtful baby this month...
Since I can't talk yet, I've been working on
nonverbal communication. My parents can
be a little slow sometimes, so it's a real trick
training them to respond correctly!

A big smile usually gets good results no matter
what I'm trying to tell the big people...

This is the look I've been practicing for when we
go to the toy store.

This is: "Hey you two- hurry up with that food!!"

And then I reward them with the grateful adoration look...

...and follow it up with the silly grin!

Oops! we can't finish this month without a big
"Thank You" to aunt Molly for the great hat & sweater!

The highlights of this month:

Owen is really working on sounds this month. In addition to the cooing & gooing, he's learned squeaks & squeals, and really plays with sounds. He will often go on for several sentences of gibberish instead of just making a single syllable sound (Standard baby stuff to the rest of the world I guess, but it gets us all excited...). He continues to be very good natured, fusses little, & smiles often. Unfortunately, he doesn't like the camera, (perhaps the flash is scary) so we haven't had much luck getting any of the really good smiles on film.

Owen is also taking much more of an interest in his surroundings. This is the first month that he's been obviously bored at any time (and unwilling to put up with it.) Nick put up a couple of mobiles over the area where he spends most of his time, and they've helped to keep him content when the big people aren't fussing over him. Listening to music also seems to help when he gets bored.

He can easily hold up his head & control it now, and he's starting to have pretty good control of his hands... not really graceful yet, but he's aware that they're his hands and attached to him. (Last month, he'd look really surprised when he hit himself in the face.) He can fling things quite a distance & plays with his stuffed giraffe sometimes.

The dogs that were just starting to venture back to the changing table now have to dodge the occasional pacifier & stuffed animal, but they're happily anticipating the day when food starts raining from the sky.

Owen is getting some new hair in to replace the original red mop. It looks a little more like it will be blond, but I suppose hair color is a "wait & see" thing at this age anyway.
